WORLD WIDE LIFE DAY

Have you ever thought🤔 about this? While growing up and till now, the closest connection we ever had to nature is  our little green parks, gardens or small lakes at our backyard😟. In fact most of the species we can identify, are those we watched in documentaries, thank God for NATGEO Wild😁.

According to international union for conservation of nature's Red list of threatened species, *over 8,400 species of wild fauna and flora are critically endangered 😭while close to 30,000 more are declared endangered or vulnerable, I.e approximately it is suggested that over a million species are threatened with extinction.* 😱

But why should we care?🤷🏾‍♀️. *Because the health of nature is linked to the health and prosperity of humans.* The emergence of COVID-19 tend to be associated to destruction of forest, wilderness.

 Healthy ecosystems are the foundation of today's global societies and economies and the ones we desire to build. As more and more spices are tossed to extinction, the life support on which civilization is build upon also begins to deteriorate.

In case you do not know, continual degradation and loss of habitat (caused by human activities in a bid for civilization, industrialization expansion 😩),  hunting, over exploitation and  illegal trading of these species for the medicinal component, furs, and their parts are major reasons why these species  are on the edge of extinction.😩😩..

Recovery of species and restoration of ecosystems are ten times higher than the cost🤗.

Here are some the  importance of recovery of keystone  species 👇;

1️⃣ .Proper balance of ecosystems: The existence of preys and predators helps keep population balance in check, if a predator is in extinct, the prey population can proliferate causing unbalance to the ecosystems (Shark 🐋🐋for examples often prey on sick or old fish, leaving healthier animals to flourish and  this prevent overgrazing 🤗.

2️⃣.Maintenance of   Ecosystem engineering: some keystone species are responsible for maintaining and producing distinct habitats. They are called *ecosystem engineers,* and example is beavers which removes dead trees along riverbanks and creat dams that divert water creating wetlands habitats. Amazing right?🥳. Also elephants 🐘🐘, as they travel vast distance helps support vegetation growth by dispersing seeds through their trunk, this also help maintain genetic diversity of tress🥦🥦. 🥳🥳.

3️⃣. Tremendous improvement in medicine:  over 50% of the most prescribed medicine are originally derived from plants. With only 5% of the known plants species have been tested for medical use. Tens of thousands of  humans die from diseases with no cure, the cure to many diseases comes from plant yet to be identified. The more reason we must protect all spices before they are lost forever. (PS: lets not lose these species and fight cancer, leukemia, alzheimer's disease by ourselves Nah 🙏).

Our actions have brought us to this critical point where our planet is like a time bomb🥺😢. We can conserve what ever species  we have let,  by having effective, robust regulatory systems that integrates health and conservation as it's primary focus.

As individuals, you can help conserve these keystone species by :

♻️Reducing your carbon footprint, limit your plastic usage.

🧍‍♂️.Volunteer or hold your local trash cleanup to protect habitat.

Make your yard wildlife friendly( plant native species of flowers, tress, etc).

❎Stop the use of insecticide, pesticides or herbicides on your lawn or garden

💵. Donate to organizations actively  involved in wildlife conservation.

📢.Speak up: share your passion for wildlife conservation with friends and family.  Educate them about the effect of wildlife extinction and ask them to pledge to do what they can to stop wildlife trafficking.

Not just on wildwildlife day alone, but everyday we must act to protect all species and ecosystems at risk, for people and for nature.
